As temperatures rise, it’s important to take extra steps to protect older adults from heat-related illnesses.
Our bodies become more sensitive to heat as we age, and even mild dehydration or sun exposure can quickly become dangerous.
Here’s a helpful checklist from our care team:
Stay Hydrated
- Encourage 6–8 glasses of water per day
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate
- Offer fruits with high water content (like watermelon and cucumbers)
Keep Cool
- Stay indoors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Use fans or air conditioning
- Dress in light, loose-fitting clothes
- Visit air-conditioned public spaces if needed (e.g., libraries, shopping centers)
Use Sun Protection
- Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses
- Use umbrellas or seek shade whenever possible
Review Medications
Some medications increase heat sensitivity.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist if your loved one takes:
- Diuretics
- Antihistamines
- Blood pressure medications
- Other medications that affect hydration or thermoregulation
Know the Warning Signs of Heat Illness
Watch for these symptoms:
- Dizziness or fainting
- Nausea or vomiting
- Muscle cramps
- Rapid heartbeat
- Fatigue or weakness
- Confusion or disorientation
- Pale, clammy, or flushed skin
What to Do if Someone Gets Overheated
- Move to a cooler place – indoors or in the shade
- Provide fluids – preferably water or electrolyte drinks
- Cool the body – use damp cloths on the neck, wrists, or forehead
- Loosen clothing – to help the body cool down
- Seek medical help immediately if the person becomes confused, unconscious, or doesn’t improve in 30 minutes
Let’s keep summer safe and enjoyable for everyone.
