Wellness After 60: Is It Ever Too Late to Feel Great?

Aug 1, 2025 | General, Mental Health

August is National Wellness Month, the perfect time to remind ourselves that good health doesn’t come with an expiration date.

Many of us remember those posters from our younger years – images of fit, youthful models we admired, believing life would be perfect if we could only look like them. But real life is more complex. While appearances may fade with time, health, strength, and vitality don’t have to.

Whether it’s been 50 or 60 years since we first saw those posters, one thing remains true: we can still feel strong, energetic, and confident. And the best part? We will if we focus on what truly matters at this stage of life.

Why Wellness Matters More Now Than Ever

As we age, our bodies change. We begin to lose bone density. Bone density loss typically accelerates after age 35, with women experiencing a more rapid decline, especially during and after menopause, where they can lose about 2% of their bone density each year. This bone loss can lead to osteoporosis, a condition where bones become weak and more susceptible to fractures. We become more prone to fractures, and one bad fall can shift life dramatically, requiring ongoing care or a move to a facility.

But this isn’t inevitable. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help protect your independence.

Exercise helps:

  1. Build stronger muscles to support joints
  2. Ease arthritis pain
  3. Improve balance, flexibility, and mobility
  4. Boost the immune system
  5. Improve mood and mental health by increasing serotonin

Small Changes, Big Results: Healthy Eating Tips

You don’t need a fancy diet or expensive foods. Just a few mindful changes can make a significant impact:

  1. Cut portions in half
  2. Use smaller plates to avoid overeating
  3. Skip the sweets if they tempt you – don’t buy or bake them
  4. Bake instead of fry
  5. Season with herbs instead of butter or salt
  6. Add more protein, less fat, and 4 – 5 servings of fruits and vegetables
  7. Don’t add extra salt – lower sodium helps reduce blood pressure

Move Your Body – Your Way

You don’t need a gym to get active. A solid fitness routine for seniors includes:

  1. Aerobic activity (walking is perfect)
  2. Strength training (light weights or resistance bands)
  3. Stretching and flexibility (try a senior-friendly video online)

Start where you are. Walk around the block or the mall. Pick up light weights at a discount store. Find a free YouTube class made for seniors. It doesn’t have to be expensive; it just has to be consistent.

The Best Gift You Can Give Yourself

By making small, healthy changes now, you’re investing in more years of independence, movement, and joy.

None of us wants to spend our final years reliant on others or living in a facility – and we don’t have to. Wellness is within reach, no matter your age.

So, this National Wellness Month, take a step – any step – toward a healthier you. You deserve to live your best life – on your terms.
