Many people find caregiving one of the most intense activities. For most, caregivers’ days go from early morning to late at night, often during the night.
If you have ever conversed with a caregiver, the most common thing they say is that they are exhausted. The exhaustion they experience is multifaceted. A large amount is physical and, many times, more psychological. The caregiver has emotions like a rollercoaster that keeps on going. They love the person they care for but resent them at the same time.
Over time, the stress reaches a tipping point where the caregiver reaches the limit of how much they can do. They reach a breaking point where they often think they can’t tolerate much more and there is nothing they can do. The caregiver often describes it as being on an island with no way off and no chance for a lifeline. So, what can be done for the caregiver?
If you know a caregiver, throw them a lifeline. Offer to care for their loved ones so they can do something nice to refresh themselves. Better yet, rather than just taking over for them, you can bring them something, for example, a gift certificate to get their nails done or a set of movie tickets so they can divert their minds and relax for an afternoon.
Giving care to the caregiver through listening and being present is also a gift because many caregivers have lost their connections with friends and have little to no interaction outside the house.
The sweetness of knowing that someone cares for you and acknowledges your situation may be everything a caregiver needs to survive one more day by dispelling some of the depression that goes hand in hand with what they are doing.
Most caregivers know that if the person they take care of understands how much devotion they give, they will be grateful, but more often, that is not the case. Show your love for someone who desperately needs you today. The rewards are immeasurable.
