February is American Heart Month and a perfect opportunity to learn how to show our hearts all the LOVE!
Heart disease is a significant issue. In 2022, 1 in 5 deaths in America were attributed to heart disease. 1 in 20 adults will experience coronary artery disease, making it the most common form of heart disease and a leading contributory cause of death in the United States. It is estimated that 1 in 20 adults over the age of 20 have coronary artery disease.
How Can I Prevent Heart Disease?
Keep in mind that small lifestyle changes can significantly impact heart health. Here are some encouraging ways to make healthier choices to reduce the risk.
- Eat a well-balanced diet. Diets high in fat and cholesterol are a leading cause of heart disease.
- Manage other chronic health conditions. Take measures to control your blood pressure. Poorly managed diabetes is a common comorbidity in patients with heart disease.
- Consume alcohol in moderation. Excessive alcohol consumption is known to raise the risk of heart disease.
- Quit smoking! Smoking increases the risk for cardiac conditions exponentially.
- Exercise has countless benefits for heart health. Walking is one of the best ways to help your heart.
